Getting Fired: The Best Thing That Ever Happened

Merry Korn, an accomplished Columbus business owner, will provide a compelling account and backstory of how she started from ground zero and built an 1,100-employee for-profit social enterprise that gives hiring priority to people with barriers to work. Merry references her mother's bravery and relentless endurance as a holocaust survivor and the film Schindler's List as the inspiration for creating an enduring business that for the past 20 years in 29 states has given hiring priority to thousands of disabled veterans, veterans, military spouses, people with disabilities, and people living in geographically challenged areas.

Her presentation will conclude with personal and professional lessons learned to help you have success in business and in life.

    Life Lessons Takeaways:

    • Be fearless in finding your life mission.
    • No matter where you are today, take steps every day to move towards what is in your heart that you want to accomplish.
    • No matter what support you did not have as a child, you can move on to realize your dreams.
    Business Lessons Takeaways:
    • Have a business plan and update it at least 2x a year.
    • Stay focused, otherwise you lose credibility and time.
    • Use the Informational Interview to further your business.

Merry Korn, an experienced businessperson with a master's degree in social work, founded Pearl Interactive Network, a social enterprise that blends a for-profit business with a social mission that provides work opportunities to the people with barriers to employment. Through Merry's leadership, the company employs over 1,100 employees, and is registered for business in 31 states. Pearl Interactive Network gained traction among the world's largest federal and commercial BPOs and positioned the company as a contact center with specialties in health care and beneficiary services. Pearl provides BPOs with mandated certifications, such as small business, WOSBE, and HUBZone, while meeting drivers for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

Merry is a board member for NASWASI, a for-profit liability insurance arm of the National Association of Social Workers. She is a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners Public Policy Committee, the Ohio Women's Coalition, and a volunteer with the Women's Small Business Accelerator (WSBA), and she held a board position with SocialVentures, a nonprofit that assisted nascent social enterprises with business plans and funding.

During Merry's spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, yoga, and golf.
